caravaggio completò sia il martirio di san matteo che la chiamata di san matteo , le sue prime due opere commissionate pubblicamente , per la cappella contarelli a roma nel 1600 . questo dipinto segna il momento esatto in cui il manierismo ortodosso ha lasciato il posto all'emotività barocca , e immediatamente catapultò caravaggio nella celebrità . la scena è stata specificamente richiesta dal cardinale contarelli prima della sua morte , e che il dipinto dovrebbe richiedere tre cose : il santo viene assassinato da un soldato , spettatori che mostrano emozioni di shock e disgusto , e architettura come elemento di sfondo . Il dipinto , su essere x-rayed , mostra le prove che caravaggio ha tentato due diverse composizioni prima di completare quella che vediamo oggi , alla fine eliminando completamente l'elemento architettonico .
